| "Serious Signing" is a sign language instruction package of two parts: The first part is a computer tutorial written in the popular multimedia package, HyperStudio. With it you can learn and practice the signs, then learn how to sign whole sentences. Some of the tutorials allow you to proceed at your own speed while others give you the option of having HyperStudio present the signs to you at speeds anywhere from slow to hot! The second part consists of Acrobat files you can open and then print out from Acrobat Reader (not shown here). The print-outs consist of a sign language instruction and lesson book that has lots of examples you can sign to yourself or another person, a reference manual of all the signs in the tutorial, plus a booklet that lets you practice reading the actual signs in sentence form. NOTE: Both the HyperStudio player and Acrobat Reader are free. WHAT'S ON THE CD?
Below are some sample screens from the HyperStudio tutorial. We don't have the space to show all the screens since there are well over 100 and probably closer to 200 individual screens. (We've never counted them!) But the screens will give you some idea of what the program looks like. If you would like even more information about this package, please feel free to e-mail me at- dick@awestruckebooks.net The total cost is $24.95 plus $2.00 shipping. | |||||

| Serious Signing Reviewed by Sandy Cummins of the AUSTRALIAN CHRISTIAN FREELANCE WRITER "Serious Signing is a multipurpose teaching tool for novices at American Sign Language. With tutorials, pictures and printable charts, this software is the ideal teacher. The program is logically set out with the main menu starting at the basics: "Numbers", "Alphabet", "Finger Spelling" and "Signs". "The layout is easy to understand, with your choices on the left and the appropriate sign on the right. The signs are well drawn, with a written explanation for any signs that require hand movment. "There are varying degrees of difficulty, so that you can progress as you learn. "Finger Spelling" has the option of Easy, Intermediate or Difficult Sentences. With a Hide/Show answer facility to allow you to quiz yourself as you progress. Each sentence is signed with a mouse click required to advance to the next letter. ""Signs" is such a large section that it has its own menu. "Survival Signs" (words like help, stop, yes and no); "Common Phrases" (thank you, excuse me, hello). And when you think you are beginning to master this challenging form of communication, there is "More Signs" - a fairly large list of non-essential words. These include: "mother", "home", "who", "where" and "what". When you are really good, try "Signed Sentences 1 and 2" -- two lists which contain 25 sentences each. "There were some nifty features, including the ability to print out the "cards" of various sections. Personally, I have printed up the alphabet so that I can study it any time -- eventually I will get to the stage where I will print out the sentences. You can also print to video, which runs the cards sequentially so that you don't have to keep clicking -- it is almost like watching a video. "You can rename, save, and search through your "stacks," allowing ease of movement once you know what you are looking for. I found this program to be very useful. Like all new skills, it does require some effort on your part, but it certainly makes learning a new language as easy as possible." | |||||
