DESCRIPTION:

Mitchell Prescott, the fourth Earl of Rockford sees Alanna at a ball, standing tall above the crowd with red highlights shining through her rich mahogany hair, and immediately decides she's the woman he wants to marry. The biggest obstacle to his plan is Alanna's decision to devote herself to educating underprivileged children.

He launches a campaign worthy of the generals who defeated Napoleon. He shows interest in her school and furnishes school supplies, which softens Alanna's heart, but the nature of his proposal is awkward if not offensive.

Alanna is attracted to Mitchell, but wants to be loved by the man she marries and he hasn't declared his love. So she adamantly declares she will never marry. Somehow he must overcome her objections. Does he finally realize that love is the answer?

Excerpt:

She did not know how she recognized his voice, but she did, immediately. It was low and melodious and suggestive. Suggestive of what? It was suggestive of kisses, embraces and strange stirrings in her body that made her both uncomfortable and eager at the same time.

She turned and looked up and up into his face. He was no less handsome without the beard, but she experienced a little regret that the beard was gone. His evening attire left absolutely nothing to be desired. It was black, subdued and fit him like a second skin. He was wearing knee britches, with long stockings and dancing slippers.

"My lord, I did not know you were here."

"Did you not, Miss Fairchild? I thought you were looking around for someone and I fondly hoped it would be me," he said. His smile crinkled the corners of his eyesÐblue eyes that picked up the glitter from the candles. Or did the glitter come from some emotion within? He moved closer and Alanna backed up. She was sure she would fait if he came any closer. His effevt on her was s o powerful and so mysterious that she wanted to turn and run. She, a person who never, ever ran from a challenge.

"I was not looking for you, my lord," she denied. "I have not been in this ball room since it was redecorated and I was just looking around."

"May I have this dance? I believe it to be a waltz and if I recall accurately we dance a waltz very well together."

Alanna nodded. There was nothing else she could do. Even in this less formal situation, one simply did not turn down a n eligible parti if one wanted to dance the rest of the evening.

He swept her into his arms immediately before the first strains of the music had started.

"My lord, the music has not begun. You are making us conspicuous. I must protest."

Before she finished the sentence the music started nd he twirled her onto the floor, his massive body dominating her the way no other dancer ever did. "My dear, we are conspicuous simply because we are who we are, do you not know that?"

"I have always hated being so noticeable. I have been fighting it ever since I was twelve years old and achieved most of my height."

"Relax, my sweet. Enjoy yourself. You are the envy of every other young woman in this hall."

Author BIO: Reading was a big part of Dorothy Compton's life as a child. In the winter she curled up with a book at every opportunity. Music also played a big role in her life as a child and it was a toss-up to decide which she liked most: music or reading.

She often wrote book reports for her friends and honestly didn't realize she was helping them cheat. She simply liked to read the books and the book reports weren't difficult. It also made her quite popular.

She won second place in a statewide short story contest when a senior in high school and felt she was destined to be a writer. Alas! An insensitive high school principal made some very negative remarks about her writing. No one bothered to tell her it was only one person's opinion so she simply dropped the idea and turned to music, majoring in music at the University of Oklahoma with a minor in English.

She taught Vocal Music and English in the public schools of Oklahoma and Kansas as well as privately. She still had an itch to write so when her husband retired they moved to Oklahoma City where she took two correspondence courses in writing from Writer's Digest. She loved writing and was quite surprised when she found a market for some of her short stories. Two of her five novels won honorable mention at the OWFI (Oklahoma Writers Federation Inc.) contests. She loves to sell everything she writes, but is firmly convinced the process of writing is a reward in itself.

Dorothy's daughter and three spoiled cats live with her and she stays busy writing family memories.
