Excerpt:
Jamie had to
find out if this man standing before her had those scars. She curled
her fingers around his shirt and tugged at it.
Ty hands clasped
hers in a tight grip. "What do ye think ye are doing?"
"I want to know
what kind of a lover I'm getting before I consent to let ye have
the horse."
His dark eyes
narrowed into slits as his gaze bored into hers. "Ye want a sample
before I agree to your proposition? Is that it?"
She kept her
eyes steady under his cutting stare. "I
wouldn't want
to discover that ye weren't up to my standards after we made this
bargain."
He gazed at
her and Jamie waited with baited breath to see if he would accept
her unusual proposal. The longer he gazed at her the more Jamie
was positive he was tempted by her offer.
Bonny Lad nickered
and it seemed to jerk Ty out of his thoughts. He released her hands
and stepped back from her. "Ye are a lovely woman and I'm sure many
men would take ye up on your...extraordinary offer. But I'd rather
purchase this horse in the usual manner."
"Ye won't reconsider?"
Instantly Jamie knew she shouldn't have pushed him. Where before
he had been coldly polite, even curious, he now appeared offended.
"That is a price
I will not pay."
"Either that
or ye're afraid of me," she said trying to goad him into acceptance
of her offer. But her feelings were experiencing a toxic, swirling
mixture of anger and regret that she had even offered this proposition.
His hands balled
into tight fists and he turned away from her. "I don't like women
like you, Your Grace."
"What kind of
woman is that?" Behind his back Jamie reached out to touch him,
but stopped and let her hand fall to her skirt.
"Practiced.
Demanding. Immoral."
Practiced?
If only he knew. Jamie's raised her chin. "No more immoral than
you. You're the one who is married, as ye so kindly reminded me."
He turned to
face her again and there was a look of disbelief in his eyes. "But
I dinna accept your rather interesting offer."
"Ye thought
about it. And ye just now called it 'interesting'." Head high Jamie
started to walk toward the door. He reached out and grabbed her
by the arm.
"Just how many
men have been your lovers?"
A small quivering
smiled played on Jamie's lips. "Only one. My husband. If it's any
of your business."
She jerked her
arm free of Ty's grasp and mustering up what was left of her dignity
she sedately walked to the door. Blinded by her quiet tears, that
she was thankful Ty couldn't see, she fumbled with the lock until
she finally managed to open the door and departed from the stables.
The open door swung shut with a gentle wooden thud.
