Laurie Alice Eakes began her writing career at the age of ten, when an organization published an anthology of children's original works. Since that time, Laurie's short stories and poetry have appeared in various publications in the U.S. and Canada.

While teaching high school English, she used her summer vacation to write her first full-length novel. Pleased with the result, she wrote other novels. Shortly afterward, she began winning local and national writing contests. At the 1994 Romance Writers of America national conference in New York City, she presented a workshop on writing about characters with disabilities. That same year, she put her creative writing on hold to pursue a career as a technical writer, during which time she received a contract for writing "Virginia Wine, a Tasteful Guide," a nonfiction work on the history and current state of the Virginia wine industry.

Technical writing, however, did not satisfy Ms. Eakes' need to create the type of characters, adventures, and romances set in her favorite time periods, so she returned to novel writing. She also returned to university to work on her master's degree in history. Within six months of beginning graduate school, and within ten days of submitting her first historical novel, The Widow's Secret to an editor, the novel was accepted for publication.

Ms. Eakes lives in Southwest Virginia with her calico cat, Diana, and her golden retriever, Brick. Despite a difficult course load, she manages to indulge her love of music through attending live performances and taking voice lessons, reads at least one romantic historical novel a week, and works on creating new characters and plots for other's enjoyment and her own satisfaction.
